I believe most likely it was made to function as a tea caddy (there are some very fine 19th c example of tea caddies in the form of houses)

and this fabulous passage of what looks like pure geometrical delight at left--the perfect complement to the color blocking of her dress

13 inches long overall x 3/8" wide and deep

and even better for the hand-written notes on the reverse

Chicago, 1936), dating to the 1960s this and a second portrait, which I think may both be self portraits. I find them both very full of life, and very human, and the handling of the stripes on this shirt really does it for me! Somehow makes me think both of Alex Katz and Francesco Clemente, really quite beautiful. 13 7 8" x 10 3 4". Ink, inkwash, watercolor, charcoal. Tearing folding along
