I believe most likely it was made to function as a tea caddy (there are some very fine 19th c example of tea caddies in the form of houses)
and this fabulous passage of what looks like pure geometrical delight at left--the perfect complement to the color blocking of her dress

and even better for the hand-written notes on the reverse

Chicago, 1936), dating to the 1960s this and a second portrait, which I think may both be self portraits. I find them both very full of life, and very human, and the handling of the stripes on this shirt really does it for me!
