Feels so visceral and direct, not messing around with jointed corners, just digging out the inside. And this old one with a sweet little carved knob at the end of the sliding lid. Could be that the unpainted pine lid replaced an earlier one, but if so has been with it for a very long time, lovingly done and perfectly fitting. Perhaps made to hold slate pencils, but good for whatever little odds and ends now,
